PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN

ARYABHATT (476 CE)

MASTER ASTRONOMER AND MATHEMATICIAN
Born in 476 CE in Kusumpur ( Bihar ), Aryabhatt's intellectual brilliance remapped the boundaries of mathematics and astronomy. In 499 CE, at the age of 23, he wrote a text on astronomy and an unparallel treatise on mathematics called 'Aryabhatiyam.' He formulated the process of calculating the motion of planets and the time of eclipses. Aryabhatt was the first to proclaim that the earth is round, it rotates on its axis, orbits the sun and is suspended in space - 1000 years before Copernicus published his heliocentric theory. He is also acknowledged for calculating p (Pi) to four decimal places: 3.1416 and the sine table in trigonometry. Centuries later, in 825 CE, the Arab mathematician, Mohammed Ibna Musa credited the value of Pi to the Indians, 'This value has been given by the Hindus.' And above all, his most spectacular contribution was the concept of zero without which modern computer technology would have been non-existent. Aryabhatt was a colossus in the field of mathematics.

Its translation in several languages of the world bear testimony to its eminence. In his treatise ' Siddhant Shiromani ' he writes on planetary positions, eclipses, cosmography, mathematical techniques and astronomical equipment. In the ' Surya Siddhant ' he makes a note on the force of gravity: 'Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, planets, constellations, moon, and sun are held in orbit due to this attraction.' Bhaskaracharya was the first to discover gravity, 500 years before Sir Isaac Newton . He was the champion among mathematicians of ancient and medieval India . His works fired the imagination of Persian and European scholars, who through research on his works earned fame and popularity.

ACHARYA KANAD (600 BCE)

FOUNDER OF ATOMIC THEORY
As the founder of ' Vaisheshik Darshan '- one of six principal philosophies of India - Acharya Kanad was a genius in philosophy. He is believed to have been born in Prabhas Kshetra near Dwarika in Gujarat . He was the pioneer expounder of realism, law of causation and the atomic theory. He has classified all the objects of creation into nine elements, namely: earth, water, light, wind, ether, time, space, mind and soul. He says, 'Every object of creation is made of atoms which in turn connect with each other to form molecules.' His statement ushered in the Atomic Theory for the first time ever in the world, nearly 2500 years before John Dalton . Kanad has also described the dimension and motion of atoms and their chemical reactions with each other. The eminent historian, T.N. Colebrook , has said, 'Compared to the scientists of Europe , Kanad and other Indian scientists were the global masters of this field.'

NAGARJUNA (100 CE)

The Manipura (Solar Plexus) Chakra

Manipura is the third Chakra from the Muladhara. It is located within the Sushumna Nadi, in the Nabhi Sthana (region of navel). This has its corresponding centre in the physical body and has control over the liver, stomach, etc.

This is a very important centre. From this Chakra emanate ten Yoga Nadis which appear like the petals of a lotus. The vibrations that are produced by the Nadis are represented by the Sanskrit letters डं ढं णं दं धं नं पं फं (dam, dham, nam, dam, dham, nam, pam, pham). The Chakra is of the colour of dark clouds. Within there is a space triangular in form. It is the Agni Mandala (region of fire—Agni Tattva). The Bijakshara raü), the Bija of Agni, is here. The presiding deity is Vishnu and Goddess is Lakshmi. This Chakra corresponds to Svah or Svarga Loka and to Solar Plexus in the physical body.

The Yogi who concentrates at this Chakra gets Patala Siddhi, can acquire hidden treasures and will be free from all diseases. He has no fear at all from Agni (fire). “Even if he is thrown into the burning fire, he remains alive without fear of death.”, (Gheranda Samhita).

MAHALAKSHMI SADHANA

I had reached an age where soon I had to burden the responsibilities of life. It is a sacred tradition in our family to seek the guidance and blessings of our revered Sadgurudev before starting anything. I too thought of doing so before launching my career. But a call to Jodhpur and I came to know that Sadgurudev was engaged in some sadhana of his own and would not meet anybody for at least a few months.

Hence I had to begin my business without his blessings. I started off with great enthusiasm and courage. I had just settled in business when problems started coming up. First I dealt them courage but soon the onslaughts became so frequent that I started feeling help before them. Within a few months my business collapsed and I was filled with great disappointment so much so that I felt like give up everything and running away.

One day without informing anybody I left to Jodhpur and reached Sadgurudev Ashram. But there I was told that he would emerge from sadhana only after two months. I decided to stay there and share the work in Ashram. The in-charge of Ashram knew me well and he allowed me to do so. I even started wearing ochre robes meant for ascetics.

After two months Sadgurudev came out of his sadhana room finally. He looked a bit lean. When his eyes fell on me a look of disappointment came on his features. But he did not say anything. The next day he called me and asked me why I was there. I was unable to relate my misadventures to him so he asked me to write them on a paper and give to him. This I did and having read it he said, “ I did not expect such cowardly behavior from you. You are deceiving yourself. Do you think by wearing ochre robes you shall be free from your family responsibilities? True, ascetic life is wonderful but it is not for escapists. You have to go back”.

He fell silent and then continued, "I know you are facing problems but there are solutions for them in Tantra. You shall have to accomplish Lakshmi Sadhana. May be you do not know but even great Guru Shankaracharya had to accomplish Lakshmi Sadhana. Otherwise how would he have been able to establish four divine spiritual seats all over India? A real man never bows down before adversities. He attains victory over them through Sadhanas if need be.”

Later he made me accomplish a very special Mahalakshmi Sadhana. I returned home and restarted my business and within a year I had achieved amazing success. If today I am so wealthy, prosperous and happy it is due to that powerful ritual. With Sadgurudev’s permission I am revealing it here for benefit of others.

Start this ritual on Wednesday. At night after 10 pm have bath and wear clean red clothes .Make a mark with vermilion on the forehead .Sit on a red mat facing south. Cover a wooden seat with red cloth .In a plate draw a Swastik with saffron. On them place a Mahalakshmi Yantra. Light a ghee lamp. Offer vermilion, rice grains, rose petals on the Yantra. Offer prayers to lord Ganpati chanting Om Gam Ganpataye Namah five times. Thereafter chant one round of Guru Mantra and pray to Guru for success. Then with a Kamalgatta rosary chant 51 rounds of following divine Mantra

Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Shreem Om Phat
ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं श्रीं ॐ फट

Do this for two days. After that drop the rosary in a river or pound and place the Yantra in your worship place or your shop or business center। Briefly worship it daily by lighting incense and chanting the above Mantra just 11 times.

How does the Guru's grace (Guru Krupa) function?

The success of any activity depends upon the functioning of the various components constituting that activity. Just as the hydrogen bomb is more powerful than the atom bomb, so also is the subtle in comparison to the gross. This point will be illustrated by the example of the various methods employed to destroy the enemy, given below. The more progressive the step, the more effective it is.

A. Physical (gross)

Perceiving the whereabouts of the enemy with the five senses, for instance sensing the enemy or his movements, one can shoot with a gun. However, if he hides behind a struc ture, motionless then the gunman will not be able to shoot him and therefore cannot kill him. Here, only a physical weapon is employed to kill. Different substances are used for different functions, for example different tablets are used as medicine for different disease causing germs, etc. Therefore if mere physical means do not help then they should be combined with subtle means as described below.

B. A combination of physical means and a mantra (subtle)

In the ancient times, arrows were shot from a bow only after chanting a mantra. Due to the mantra, the name of the enemy would get recorded on the arrow and no matter where the enemy hid in the three regions (trilokas) that is the earth (bhu), nether region (bhuv) and heaven (svarga) the arrow would certainly kill him. This was due to the energy of the subtle means (mantra) which accompanied the weapon (arrow). The motive behind chanting mantras while preparing medicines in the Ayurveda is the same. Similarly when removing a spirit responsible for possession blackgram (udid), marking nut (bibba), lime, needles, etc. are used to the accompaniment of mantras. Nevertheless, at times inspite of both the physical and subtle being present, one does not achieve much success. At such times a more subtle means, that is more powerful mantras should be used as given below.

C. Mantra (more subtle)

In the next step an enemy can be vanquished without using physical weapons like guns, bows and arrows, etc. In order to achieve certain things, for instance marriage, riches, etc. various mantras are prescribed. At times, however, even mantras do not yield results. In such cases the next step has to be implemented.

D. The resolve (sankalpa) [even more subtle]

Even a mere thought like ‘May it occur’ in the mind of an evolved person (saint) is sufficient for the occurrence of an event. Nothing else is required. However, this is possible only in the case of a saint whose spiritual level exceeds 80%. Only when a Guru makes a resolve ‘May this disciple progress spiritually’ does the disciple make real spiritual progress. This itself is termed as the Guru’s grace (gurukrupa). A disciple cannot make spiritual progress without it as otherwise the adi (one with a beginning) illusion persists.

E. The presence (most subtle)

In this final step one does not even have to make a resolve. Mere presence, prox imity or company of the Guru is sufficient for a disciple’s spiritual practice and progress to occur automatically.
This has occurred because of Me But I have not done it.
He who has realised this is liberated From the cycles of birth and death.

- Shri Bhavarthadipika (Shri Dnyaneshvari) 4:81
Literal and implied meaning : In ‘This has occurred because of Me’, ‘Me’ refers to The Supreme God principle within oneself. ‘But I have not done it’ implies absolving oneself of the sense of doership. A beautiful example to illustrate this is the sun which awakens everyone and makes the flowers bloom, when it rises. This happens simply with its existence. The sun does not ask anyone to wake up or the flowers to bloom. The mission of a Guru of a spiritual level of more than 90% is of this nature.
The Guru’s grace operates based on points ‘D. The resolve (sankalpa) and E. The presence’ given above.

What should one do to be blessed by a Guru (Guruprapti) and His grace ?

The only virtue responsible for being blessed by a Guru quickly and the constant bestowal of His grace thereafter, is intense motiva tion for Liberation (mumukshutva) or intense yearning for a Guru. A youth strives to win a girl’s heart by constantly contemplating on what he should do to please her. Similarly, one should make all efforts to acquire the Guru’s grace so that the Guru calls one His own. One should constantly strive day and night to do whatever one can to please Him. In the Kaliyug, being blessed by a Guru or His grace is not as difficult as it was in the previous three yugs (eras). A salient point to be noted here is that one cannot be blessed by a Guru without bestowal of His grace. A Guru is already aware of who His future disciple will be. One should undertake the spiritual practice mentioned in the following points in order to acquire the grace of the Guru. The points are enumerated in ascending order of importance. Along with the practice of these points one should also try to develop the qualities of a disciple which are described in ‘Science of Spirituality : Vol. 3 - The Disciple, point 9. Qualities’.
